WebJul 24, 2024 · The model of special education known as inclusion, or mainstreaming, has become more prevalent over the past 10 years, and today, more than 60 percent of all students with disabilities (SWDs) spend 80 percent or more of their school day in regular classrooms, alongside their non-disabled peers (see Figure 1). WebInclusion works, and research has shown benefits for those with and without special needs. One study indicated by parents and teachers reports that children without disabilities who participated in an inclusive classroom were helpful to children with disabilities and also learned life skills such as empathy and compassion (Cross et al. 2004).
